Fun in the sun

I know the following statement will probably shock most of you, but I have to confess that I love to read more than I love Lady Gaga (I know. How shocking, right? I’m already like the world’s biggest Gaga fan, how can I possible have any room left in my heart to love anything else? What can I say, I’ve got big heart. Hehe.) In all seriousness, I’ve always been a bookworm, and this fact shouldn’t be a surprise to any of you, especially after my previous post. I can literally sit down with a book and read for hours and hours on end. I’ve been known to read straight through the night, too. So, yea, I simply adore it.

In the past, I’d said that I would never get into the whole eBook thing. And to this day, I still prefer reading a good old book, you know, the printed kind, with ink and paper that I can actually flip through with my fingertips. By the way, I have to add that I just LOVE the smell of a new book. I don’t really know what it is, but I just do. In any case, we don’t have a Borders or a Barnes and Noble here in Honduras (how sad, je sais), so I’ve had to give in to the whole eBook movement. I’m still amazed at the amount of literature that is available to me through my iPhone at the mere tap of a screen. I love to stay on top of current trends and so, I’m always wondering what my peers are reading. Some of my fellow booklover-friends often ask me if I’ve read any good books lately, too. It is for this reason that I decided to compile a list of ten books that I’m planning on reading this summer. To be completely honest, I like to read all kinds of literature: fiction, nonfiction, romance, fantasy, historical, etc. However, most of the books that I’ve been reading lately have been very “heavy,” in the sense that they’re mostly nonfiction books that require me a bit more processing time than a regular fiction novel. Therefore, the following list will mostly be fiction, and probably what some of you will consider light (or beach) reads. Anyways, I’ll keep you updated on how the reading’s coming along, and let me know if you’ve read (or want to read) any of the book I talk about. You’re more than welcome to add suggestions, too! Oh, and these are in no particular order.

1. Tina Fey – Bossypants
2. Elizabeth Bard –Lunch in Paris
3. Kim Sunee – Trail of Crumbs
4. David Baldacci – One Summer
5. Khaled Hosseini – A Thousand Splendid Suns
6. James Patterson – Now You See Her
7. Tom Rachman – The Imperfectionists
8. Michael Faber – The Crimson Petal and the White
9. Julie Bertagana – Exodus
10. Lisa See – Shanghai Girls

As I think I’ve left pretty clear in previous posts, I workout pretty much everyday and most of the exercise I do is actually cardio. Therefore, I need lots and lots of high-energy music. I get bored really easily, so I’m constantly searching for new tunes. Nothing screams summer more than beaches and bikinis, so I decided to put together a list of my current favorites to motivate you all to get your little booty moving! Again, these are in no particular order.

1. DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans - Louder

2. Medina – Addiction

3. Lady Gaga – The Edge of Glory

4. Swedish House Mafia – Save the world

5. Pitbull feat. Marc Anthony – Rain over me

6. Robyn – Call your girlfriend

7. Bailey – In my veins

8. Katy Perry – Last Friday Night (TGIF)

9. Britney Spears – I wanna go

10. New Boyz feat. Bei Maejor – Start me up

11. Above and Beyond – Alchemy

12. Lady Gaga – Judas

13. DJ Tiesto – Escape me

14. 4 Strings feat. Samantha Fox – Forever

15. Don Omar feat. Lucenzo – Danza Kuduro (I know it’s getting old, but it still pumps me up!!!)

This is pretty random, especially coming from someone who isn’t known for having the best-groomed nails. However, I discovered this nail polish last year in August.

I was planning on going to a wedding, and the beautiful dress I’d bought had hints of this color, so I bought the lacquer to be matchy-matchy. In the end, I actually didn’t go to the wedding (loooooong story), but I was glad that I’d discovered this wonderful color. It’s so bright and girly, and to be honest, not what I would normally go for. However, I find it to be perfect for summer! And, it's available on amazon!

My room in pictures

Hey guys! So, as you probably all know, my life isn't the most eventful right now. I pretty much spend my time at the gym, studying Japanese, watching movies, etc... One of the things that I've started doing to pass the time is watching a lot of vlogs on YouTube and one of my favorite vloggers just did a "room tour" video. So, I decided to kind of copy her idea and do a room tour of my own, only that instead of a video, I took a bunch of pictures in my room and will explain what's featured in each of them. Most of my readers are friends that I've left behind in Miami (and who have not come to visit me in Honduras, BY THE WAY!!!) so, I figured that you'd enjoy seeing my natural habitat. Some of you did get a chance to see my room in Miami, but you'll quickly see that my room in Honduras is VERY different. While my room in Miami was Japanese/Asian themed; the one in Honduras doesn't necessarily have a theme, but it's much more girly, and I'd say sophisticated, too. Anyways, let me know what you think! Love and miss you all!

This is the entrance to my room. I like to call it my "Hall of Fame," for it's got most of the awards I received for excellent academic achievement during high school. Out of all of them, this is my pride and enjoy, my Valedictorian one:

Now, this is the view of my room as soon as you step through the door:

For those of you who don't know, that white thing in the top right corner is my air conditioner. We don't have central airconditioning in the house, so all of the rooms have one of those babies! You've probably also noticed the dark paint on the walls. From the ages of 12 to 21 my room was actually teal (you're not the only teal lover, Jenny! hehe), but then I decided that I wanted a change and went for a purple! :) Also, the furniture I have has been with me since I was 3 years old. The only thing that changed was the bed. I used to have a beautiful canopy bed, but I outgrew it. Well, I didn't really outgrow it, it's just that it was a personal bed, and I wanted at least a full or queen bed (which is what I believe I have now.)

This is my bedside table. I have an iHome, of course - that's where my iPhone spends most of its time, actually. (While I was taking the pictures, however, it was doubling as my camera.) I also have a lamp with a customized shade. The lamp shade was actually made for me by my mom, and I really love it! You can also see that I've got 2 teddy bears: one I got from Victoria Secret's Pink, when I spent like $50; the other was a parting present from one of my dearest friends, Paolita - she just loves giraffes and gave me a mini giraffe when I was leaving Miami to always remember her by. (Love you Paolita!)

This is just a front view of my bed. I got the covers at Bed, Bath, and Beyond about 5 years ago, and I still really like them!

This is a Paris-themed storage box I got at Burlington Coat Factory about a year ago. Before I became obsessed with Japan, I actually used to love everything about France (I even took a French course at Tulane University.) So, I guess that when I bought this, my love for all things French was starting to make a comeback.

However, if you open it up, you see:

Hehe. I'm using it to store the Japanese study materials that I use everyday. I actually study sprawled out on the floor because I find it to be more comfortable (don't ask.) So, when I'm done studying, I just throw everything in there and I'm done with the cleanup.

This is my yoga mat and some dumbbell sets. This is pretty obvious from the picture, so I don't know why I felt compelled to explain what they were. LOL. For the record, I use these things about 4 times a week. :)

These are my new Nike Free 2.0+ (Livestrong edition) running shoes. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm trying to become a runner, and so I bought these shoes because I've read fabulous reviews for them everywhere. I must say that they were one of the best $100 I've spent in my entire life. They're so comfortable that you don't really feel like you're wearing shoes and they're very shock-absorbant. If you're a runner and don't have them yet, trust me: GET THEM!

Now, on to my TV table. I actually got the TV as a Christmas present from my family this year, so it's relatively new. I don't have cable in my room, but that's ok because I don't watch that much TV. I do, however, love the fact that I can just hook up my external hard drive to the TV (by means of a USB port) and watch any downloaded movies I might have on there. This is something that I make us of almost every night! Just last night, I watched "From Prada to Nada," which I'd downloaded a few days ago. The movie was okay, but then again, I hardly ever HATE any movie. As you can see, my TV table also doubles as a bookshelf - I ran out of space on the bookshelves on my desk, so I had to improvise. :)

Tada. On to my desk.

This is a closeup of my bookshelves:

I like to call this area the corner of goodness. Why? Because it's where most of my jewelry and watches are.

I'm a huge watch person and these are just some of the ones I've got in my collection. However, I don't keep them all here (because they don't fit.)

This is some sweet matcha powder that my brother got me from Whole Foods when he went to Miami (he just returned a week ago.) My friend Paolita gave me some green tea latte powder back in January and I fell in love with it, so I asked my brother to look for something similar. If you haven't tried green tea lattes yet, you absolutely must! They are divine. A cup of milk plus a spoonful of this sweet matcha powder and you're good to go! Simply delicious.

Also in the corner of goodness you can find my HUGE Hello Kitty. I got her as as birthday present when I turned 16. I absolutely love Hello Kitty, always have and probably always will. In fact, and this is a little known fact about me: my family calls me "Kitty" because of my childhood obsession with the cute feline. It's actually interesting, because as much as I adore HK, I just can't stand cats. (Sorry to all cat lovers out there, they're just not for me.)

This is the last piece of furniture I've got in my room, and it's also my least favorite. It's just bulky and takes up too much space. But again, I've had most of this furniture since a young age, so I find it hard to part with it. Although it's meant to serve as wardrobe, right now it's just storing things I no longer use or can't find where to put.

I do really like the lamp that sits atop it, though. It's a dolphin lamp (my favorite animals) and I got it at Dolphin Mall in Miami about 10 years ago. I don't remember the name of the store where I bought it, but it was really trippy. LOL

That's pretty much it for the room itself, so I'll just go ahead and show you some of my favorite things: perfumes, shoes, etc.

I absolutely adore these shoes. I got them at Nine West about a year ago and they're very me. They're black (duh!), but they've got lace (which I find to be very sexy.) I also love how tall I look when I'm wearing them. They're about 4 inches tall, and for my 5'3 height, 4 extra inches is just fantastic! Hehe.

Hanae Mori is one of my favorite perfumes in the whole wide world. I discovered it during the holidays in 2004. My brother, grandma, and I were doing some shopping in Miami (at Dolphin mall, actually) and my brother asked for Hanae Mori. As soon as I smelled the male version, I knew I had to try the female one, and it was love at first smell. It's not very popular, which I'm surprised for it's an exquisite fragrance.

Dolce & Gabbana: The One is my newest signature scent. I first got it last summer, as a birthday present. This is actually my second bottle, which I got for Christmas.

So, yea, that was my room tour. I probably showed you all too much, but since I figured not many of you will actually come to Honduras to visit me (I can't really blame you, hehe), this was the next best thing to give you a glimpse of my post-Miami life. Now, get out of my room! The princess is in.

Health 101

Weight loss is such a formulaic process that I often wonder why it is so hard for us not only to start but also to stick to any diet. The truth is, weight loss is really only about calories in versus calories out. If you are able to sustain a caloric deficit (burning more calories than what you put in) everyday, for a prolonged period of time, you will lose weight. Guaranteed. This is really the only “secret” there is. Now comes the hard part, how do you maintain such a deficit?

Well, the first thing you need to do is figure out your BMI (Body Mass Index.) BMI is supposed to be a measure of the percentage of fat in your body, and it is calculated using your height and weight. (Follow the link to get your BMI: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/) Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this measurement because I feel it’s not entirely accurate. There are some people who have a lot of lean muscle mass (either naturally or because they’re athletic), and as you know, muscle weighs more than fat – something for which the BMI doesn’t account. In any case, my personal opinions aside, BMI does give you a general idea of where you stand with regards to your weight. If your BMI is greater than 25, then you’re considered to be overweight and should really look into losing a couple of pounds.

The next step is to find your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), or the amount of calories that your body needs to have in order to function properly. There are tons of calculators online to figure this out (I’ve provided a link for you to follow: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/) Usually, when planning to lose weight you should aim towards having a 400-500 calorie deficit per day. For instance, if your BMR is about 1600 (like mine), then aim for a daily caloric intake of 1100-1200. And if you exercise and burn about 400-500 calories per session, then your total deficit in a day would be 800-1000.) It is accepted that 3,500 calories = 1 pound (so burn 7,000 calories and lose 2 pounds, etc.)

Some people don’t like calorie counting and find it hard to keep up with, which is something that I can definitely relate to. However, this is really the only method that has worked for me. I have a very slow metabolism (proven time and time again whenever I get my thyroid levels checked out), so it’s imperative that I stay in control of the things that I eat. That said, if I’m to be completely honest, I have to admit that I am a foodie – I love food and I do indulge every once in a while. However, it’s all about balance and control: I usually keep a strict diet Monday-Friday, and relax a little on the weekends (allowing myself some 200-300 calories more than what I usually consume.)

EXERCISE

As far as exercise goes, I have been working out twice a day for the past month. I admit that this isn’t realistic for most people because you have jobs and obligations that don’t give you as much free time. However, I do think that you should all try to work out at least 30 minutes a day. Half an hour isn’t that much, to be completely honest. We spend much more time watching TV or in front of the computer. But, those 30 minutes a day will do wonders for your health and overall wellbeing. I always use this quote from Legally Blonde to motivate people to exercise: “Exercise gives you endorphins. And endorphins make people happy. Happy people just don’t kill their husbands.” Hehe. So yea, workout and you won’t be a murderer. I’m kidding, of course. But seriously, do try to sweat a little everyday!

Personally, I do about an hour on the elliptical in the afternoon (burning about 500 calories) and then I walk/jog on the treadmill in the evening (burning an extra 350 calories.) Also, I try to get in some strength-training every other day. If these types of exercises aren’t for you, then there are definitely other options that you could try out. There are a TON of workout DVD’s that you could do at home if you don’t have access to a gym. My personal favorite is Zumba – I even bought the Zumba PS3 game. Most of you have probably heard of it before, but if you haven’t Zumba is a cardio workout that doesn’t really feel like a workout because you’re dancing and having fun! There are also a lot of “The Biggest Loser” type workouts – I especially like Jillian Michael’s “30 Day Shred” because it’s very intensive and works every muscle group in your body in less than 30 minutes. I’ve also tried yoga, and have to admit that it was more challenging than I thought it would be.

In any event, there are a lot of options out there. Whenever you start a fitness regimen, remember that it takes your body a couple of weeks to adapt. So, if at the beginning you feel like you’re going to die – just give it time. Your body will slowly adjust. If you keep up with it for long enough, there will come a point when you’ll even think that whatever you’re doing is too easy. At this point, it’s time to change it up and add intensity or do something else.

The point that I’m trying to get at is that unless you’ve got some serious medical condition that prevents you from exercising, there really is no excuse valid enough for you not to workout. For example, some of you may not know this, but I have REALLY bad knees. When I was 16 years old, I was told that I needed to have surgery on my left knee because I had a torn meniscus (the meniscus is the part of the knee that provides cushioning and support.) Because I was so young, I didn’t want to have my knee operated on, and so I asked for a second opinion from a doctor in Miami (who takes care of the Heat players - 305 in da house, hehe.) He told me that this had happened to me because the muscles around my knee weren’t strong enough, but that if I followed a physical therapy program, I should be able to get better. Since then, exercise has been a part of my life. Sometimes when I workout, my knee hurts so much that it feels as if it’s going to pop out, but I still workout everyday.

MORE ON NUTRITION

It would be very hard for me to tell you what to eat because a)I don’t know what your BMR is, b)What your fitness goals are, c)I don’t know what you like/don’t like to eat, etc. However, I can give you some general guidelines with regards to portion control, and a sample of my diet.

So, general nutritional guidelines:
- Carbohydrates aren’t necessarily the devil! I don’t advocate using those types of diet that cut out certain food groups (Atkins, etc.) I believe in moderation and compromise. If you are going to eat carbs, then just know how to pick them, and pick the right amount. Always opt for whole wheat bread, rice, and pasta instead of the regular kind. As far as portions go: 1 slice of bread or ½ cup of rice or pasta = 1 portion.

- Meats are proteins and proteins are good for you! Proteins are used by the body to build muscle up, give us energy, etc. On a weekly basis, I eat chicken about 4 days, fish about 2 days, and red meat only one day. Most nutritionists will tell you that a portion of meat is equivalent to about 3-4 ounces. Visually, you can measure it out by using the following → a portion of chicken or meat is about the size of your palm (without including the fingers), and a portion of fish is about the size of your palm (with the fingers extended.)

- Vegetables can generally be eaten any time of the day and in unlimited amounts. They are great because, other than being good for your body, you can stuff yourself up with vegetables, preventing you from binge eating on other things later on. The only vegetables that are off limits are: peas, yucca, corn, and potatoes (because they have a high amount of carbohydrates in them.)

- Fruits are great to snack on. Whenever I’m craving a snack, I usually want something sweet, and so fruits are a great option for me. A portion of fruit would be: one small banana, one medium apple, or ½ cup of any diced fruit.

- I try to eat every 3 hours. For instance, most days I wake up at around 9 and have breakfast at that time. Then, I’d have lunch at about 12, a snack at 3, dinner at 6, and a snack at 9pm. Why, you ask? Well, because eating often keeps your metabolism active – simple. However, you can imagine that by spreading out the amount of calories I eat on a daily basis like this, my main meals tend to be somewhat smaller than you’d expect. A general guideline to follow when planning meals: 1-2 portions of carbs (depending on how many carbs you’re planning on having the rest of the day) + 1 portion of protein + lots and lots of vegetables.

- Other than fruits, another great thing to snack on is nuts. Usually, I grab a handful of peanuts or cashews and that’ll count as one of my snacks for the day. Although nuts have lots of fat, they have the good kind of fat (the kind that supports a healthy heart), and they provide you with a lot of energy.

- Some people will tell you to avoid caffeine, but not me. Caffeine boosts your metabolism (as evident by the fact that it gives you energy.) However, just be sure to pick the type of caffeine wisely. Stay away from carbonated drinks, and if you will have some, drink the diet kind. You can have coffee, but remember that the milk and sugar you put in it counts as calories, too! (I take mine with ½ cup of skim milk and Splenda.) Teas are also a great source of caffeine.

- Water! Water is necessary to flush out the toxins from your body and to keep you hydrated. I always drink about 3 liters of water a day (it's really hot in Honduras and I sweat a lot), but doctors generally recommend for people to drink 8 glasses of water every day.

- Things to avoid as much as possible: alcohol (I know, so hard), overly processed foods (try to eat as naturally and as organically as possible), and of course, fried foods.

Well, I think I'll stop for now. I'll keep posting tips on health and fitness every once in while. Be on the lookout for recipes, workout playlists, workout suggestions, etc.

The winner takes it all (the loser has to fall)...

I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain.

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say?
Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all...

*I absolutely HATE feeling this way. Every time something happens to me that shakes me up emotionally, I can't help but go back to that time... When I felt so small, so sad, and somehow I'm dragged into it all over again, perpetuating the vicious cycle. Sigh, the winner does indeed take it all.*

Quarter life crisis...

I am about 22 hours away from turning 25 and I just cannot sleep.

(NOTE: I still think I am under some type of Cuban Santeria curse, by the way. My insomnia really has no logical explanation and in all honesty, I admit that I have cracked enough Cuban jokes to deserve a curse. In my defense, a good 20% of those jokes were not ill-intentioned. See, I'm joking again. Ugh! You people have no sense of humor. But regardless, I'm deeply saddened by the fact that two or three chickens were probably sacrificed because of said curse. I've paid my dues, please stop. Learn to take a joke, dude!!!)

Continuing with the topic at hand, I was watching 30 Rock, laying on my bed, when I dozed off and woke up a few minutes later only to find myself not only looking rather disheveled, but also feeling somewhat disturbed. My right leg was dangling from one side of the bed, my hair was in a cataclysmic mess (so cataclysmic in fact that I should not have even mentioned it - so, yea forget I brought it up, ok? I don't want you having mental images of my curly hair in all its splendor.) I said to myself (aloud, mind you), "Krizia Bandy, what on Earth are you doing with your life???" And then it hit me, I'm about to turn 25, and all of my expectations about what I would have accomplished by the time I'd reached this age are completely unfulfilled. (Well, not all of them - I did graduate college already, haven't aborted a baby, or gotten an STD for that matter, either, oh, and I certainly haven't gotten married in Vegas after a night of drunken debauchery!!! So, yay me!) Anyways, I realized that I am probably going through what has been dubbed as a quarter life crisis. As usual, I turned to my good ol' pal Wikipedia to read more on the subject and found that a quarter life crisis can have several of the following characteristics. Let's take a look shall we:

- confronting one's own mortality - ✓: I've already accepted the fact that I will die one day (in the distant, distant future) and no longer fear death. (Okay, not so bad.)
- insecurity concerning ability to love oneself, let alone another person - ✓: I don't need to explain this one if you read what I said about my cataclysmically messy hair. I need to learn to love the 'fro!!! But in all seriousness, sometimes I do wonder if I'm "cut out" for love. It's not that I'm exceedingly selfish, but it seems to me that sometimes there is a dilemma between loving yourself and loving someone else: why should you have to give up so many of the things you love about yourself in order to love someone else? I don't find it to be fair, but hmm, maybe that is just me. (This deserves an entire post on its own.)
- insecurity regarding present accomplishments - ✓: I did get into NYU's Graduate School and have lost 20 pounds, but I wanted to get into Columbia and lose 40... (What can I say? I've always been an overachiever.)
- re-evaluation of close interpersonal relationships - ✓: I've had to get rid of a whole myriad of "friends" because they just weren't up to par. In fact, I'm holding auditions for new ones. Anyone want to be a member of my posee? Get in line behind Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Rihanna (okay, maybe not Rihanna, she's a bit too raunchy...)
- lack of friendships or romantic relationships, sexual frustration, and involuntary celibacy - ✓✓✓ - Pretty much self-explanatory. I won't continue to dig my own grave with this one.
- disappointment with one's job - ✓: I'd say, or "lack of a job"
- nostalgia for university, college, high school, middle school or elementary school life - ✓✓✓: 305 4 EVA!!! ♥ (visualize me trying to do that 305 hand sign, hehe)
- tendency to hold stronger opinions - ✓: I am RIGHT. ALWAYS. And you are wrong. Just deal with it. ::finger snap::
- boredom with social interactions - ✓: God, yes!!! I said, "Let's go to the OPERA," NOT "Let's watch OPRAH." But then again, there is no opera in Honduras... maybe I should be more lenient? (Yea, right.)
- loss of closeness to high school and college friends -✓✓✓ Again, self-explanatory. People change, though. No hard feelings.
- financially-rooted stress (overwhelming college loans, unexpectedly high cost of living) - ✓: Actually, this one isn't so bad. Fortunately, I was able to get out of college without any school loans (thanks to my parental units, naturally) and I have enough money in the bank to actually be considering a trip to Europe sometime this summer, but still... I SHOULD be making like a million dollars (a month) by now!!!
- loneliness, depression and suicidal tendencies - ✓: Yes, except for the suicidal tendencies part, those have actually tamed down as of late. (I think it's probably because of all the endorphins. Either that, or they're just putting "happy chemicals" into the food we consume here in Honduras. Hey, it's totally possible. Those baleadas are soooo addictive. Note: Baleadas are one of Honduras's most original and popular foods. A baleada is a wheat flour tortilla, often quite thick, folded in half and filled with mashed fried beans, cheese, and cream.)
- desire to have children - N/A - Wooooooooooo! One that does not apply due to the fact that I am like allergic to children (and I think children are allergic to me, too.) THANK GOD!
- a sense that others are doing better than oneself - ✓: Don't most people feel this way, though? Aren't we all all vindictive, conniving creatures deep down, always lusting over what others have? No? (Oh, right. Maybe this is just one of those girl secrets that I should not have revealed. Oops. Sorry!!!)
- frustration with social skills - ✓: I'm writing on my blog at 2:30am on a Friday? Yea, my social skills are currently lacking. But, I was DA BOMB in college! I was even BIG IN JAPAN, for crying out loud!!! UGH!

So yea, I think that's settled. Phew, I feel much better now that it's out in the open! Actually, the fact that there is a whole Wikipedia article written about it makes me feel like I'm not alone in this world. I say we form an alliance: Quarter Life Crisis Sufferers Unite (QLCSU.) Yea, I'll admit the name could improve - but it's 2:30am people?! What do you expect!!!??? My vocabulary isn't at its bestest right now. (Yes, that was a joke. Albeit, a lame grammar-based one, but an intentional joke, nonetheless. I can be funny too, you know? Seriously, I know I'm rumored to be wise beyond my years and all, but I do like to joke every so often. Hint, hint: Cuba! hehe)

In conclusion, Happy Mother Effin' Birthday to me! =) Cheers!

Note: Contrary to what some people may think of me (not that I'm overly concerned with others's opinions, because again, I'm right and they're wrong, hehe), I truly believe that being able to laugh at and make fun of oneself is a necessary trait to have.

Mini update...

I know what you're thinking - "how can someone with so much free time be neglecting her blog in this deplorable manner??? That's just inexcusable." Well, in my defense, I will retort by saying that I have been feeding my brain with creative ideas! (And I've been working out like crazy, too.) I did have a mini-update last week, which included pictures of me before and after having lost 20 pounds, but I quickly took it down because it was a kind of a "limited edition post." Hehe. (Oh, how I delude myself with my ideas of grandeur and that people actually care. Some of you do care, I know. God bless your hearts.)

In any case, I have been reading Tina Fey's "Bossypants" and have started to watch her show 30 Rock. I must say, it was quite a delightful surprise. I expected the humor it contained to be vulgar and common, but quite the contrary. It's witty and very context-based, meaning that you MUST be in tune to popular culture to "get" it. If popular culture and current events aren't your thing, then I'm sorry to say that you are out of luck. If you're under 35 and are out of touch with popular culture, then I dare say I feel sorry for you. Yea, that's right. Rejoice your youth! C'mon, admit it! Everyone likes at least one Lady Gaga song. It's OK. It's much better to like her NOW than 20 years down the road (when you find yourself hating your spouse and your children, listening to a compilation CD called "Best of the '10's" as you down a whole galloon of cheap beer.)

I've also started reading Erik Larson's "In the garden of beasts," which is a non-fiction narrative that talks about Ambassador Dodd, the man in charge of the US embassy in Germany during Hitler's Third Reich. So far, it's quite good. I really like the author's style - he pays attention to detail without going overboard, provides enough foreshadowing to keep the reader interested, etc.

Oh, and I've also discovered Fran Lebowitz! This woman is a genius. I actually came randomly across the HBO documentary titled "Public Speaking," directed by Martin Scorsese, which is essentially a compilation of many of Lebowitz's talks and interviews. She has a very keen perception of society, and she isn't afraid to speak what's on her mind. Truth be told, I have become such a fan that I have bought all of her books (she only has 2 for she claims that she's been suffering from a severe case of writer's block since the 80's.) Some of my favorite quotes by her:
"Think before you speak. Read before you think."
"Your life story would not make a good book. Don’t even try." (So true for some people!)
"Romantic love is mental illness. But it's a pleasurable one. It's a drug. It distorts reality, and that's the point of it. It would be impossible to fall in love with someone that you really saw."

In any case, all of these different ideas that have been pouring into my mind lately have actually motivated me to try my hand at writing some form of social commentary. The main issue that I have is that I truly want it to be witty. I can sit here and write a 10-page essay analyzing some social problem in a jiffy, but I want whatever I write to have the same "charming, yet somewhat ironic" qualities that I do. A friend has even suggested that I try my hand at playwriting. So, there is a lot going on, at least intellectually, in my life right now...

I still haven't forgotten about the "Health" post that I promised you, so I will try to finish that up sometime this week. Before bidding you all with adieu, I want to share with you one of the latest songs I recorded. Take care my peeps!

mein Fluch.

I'll tear a page from your book
And then I'll swallow it whole,
That's all your words will be worth,
You've got no conscience, no soul.

You're a demon walking in disguise,
You're not a modern-day sage,
Just an oversexed vamp,
Sucking me dry, leaving me dazed.

You're surrounded by a great veil,
There's a darkness that looms,
You're just a coward, the mere imitation of a man,
You've written your own doom.

And you'll forget me, I know.
You've justified your offense.
For you're lethargic and cold...
But to no one other than me did you ever make sense.

A mere delusional fool,
With fake ideas of grandeur,
You don't rule over me anymore,
This crown has finally overpowered you.

But these words, a facade
Only meant to conceal,
That I've been ricocheting around,
Trying hard not to feel.

Both scripture and magical charms
Have failed at exorcising you from my mind,
How can we love what causes us so much harm?
An end to my curse I am praying to find.

*As you might've guessed by the picture, this was inspired by a few songs from Gaga's new album, particularly "Bloody Mary." It's really dark and deep, and has a few references that would only be understood given the context of the situation to which this is referring to. In any case, I really do have to add that although this was written now, it's really retrospective. Like a good friend told me, "time organizes our ideas." So yea, let me know what you think!
